on january 11, 2023, the “2023 annual conference of basic medical research in nanjing university medical school” was successfully held online. zhang junfeng, standing committee member of the nanjing university party committee, vice president of nanjing university, and dean of nanjing university medical school, jiang tian, director of the office of science and technology, shen sunan, secretary of the party committee of the medical school, jiang qing, deputy secretary of the party committee and deputy dean of the medical school, wang hongwei, vice dean of the medical school, gu ning, academician of chinese academy of sciences, professor of the medical school, and chen shuai, director of the model animal research center attended the event. more than 240 teachers and students from the department of basic medicine, model animal research center, and affiliated hospitals participated in the conference. vice dean wang hongwei presided over the opening ceremony.
vice president zhang junfeng delivered an opening remark at the opening ceremony of the conference. he fully affirmed the significant progress made by the medical school in research achievements, research projects, discipline evaluation, platform construction, and other aspects in 2022. he encouraged the school’s researchers to fully implement the spirit of the 20th national congress of the communist party of china and the important reply from general secretary xi jinping to the representative of young scholars returning from overseas studies to nanjing university, to promote the high-quality development of scientific and technological innovation and the industrial application of scientific and technological achievements, and to apply more original basic research results to clinical diagnosis and treatment. he also encouraged the school’s researchers to actively combine their basic research with clinical work, and worked hard for the development of the people’s health.
director jiang tian stated in his opening remarks that the research work of the medical school has made an important contribution to the overall research work of nanjing university. he provided three suggestions for the school’s research work in 2023: 1. coordinating the application of talent projects to make new breakthroughs; 2. expanding the channels for research project application to obtain more national-level research projects; 3. strengthening platform construction, and improving the service and support for research platforms.
this conference focused on the practical needs of the people’s health and invited academician gu ning and several professors in basic medicine to conduct in-depth discussions on clinical scientific issues, including medical equipment development, nanomedicine research and development, metabolic diseases, digestive system diseases, immune diseases, tumorigenic mechanism and treatment strategies, neurological systemic diseases, and reproductive health. the research staff of the school conducted targeted clinical basic research, closely combining clinical treatment with medical basic research, and promoting the industrial application of medical research.

medical school party secretary shen sunan delivered a closing remark. he highly praised the fruitful research results and hard work of the faculty and students of the medical school in the past year. he pointed out that basic research is the source of applied research and major innovation. he encouraged the medical school researchers to combine their research with the country’s needs, conduct organized research in the new situation, undertake more major national research projects, serve the country’s greater good, and strive to build the first-class nanjing university.
after the conference, medical school vice dean wang hongwei commented that the medical school has strong and excellent academic atmosphere and research tradition. he hoped that faculty and students of the medical school would focus on general secretary xi jinping’s important instructions on scientific work and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration through organized research. they would also focus on clinical issues, conduct targeted research, enhance their original innovation ability, and promote the clinical application of original basic research results.
